There are so many reasons to start your own business, but here are THE TOP 3, in my view.
You’re a lousy employee. I don’t know about you but I am not cut out to be an employee.
In fact, I was downright lousy at it.
I used to be in televisions news and I absolutely LOVED my job, but I hated being on someone else’s schedule. It was The One Thing that kept me from getting back into television after I had my fourth child.
Are you a lousy “employee”? That may be a good thing. Maybe it’s a sign you need to start your own business.
Be your own boss. Make your own schedule. Live life fully and completely on your terms. That’s what I wanted.
You can work from home. These are such exciting times to be a woman in business. Never before have we had the kind of freedom to chart our own course, whether as mothers who want to stay home with our children (if that’s what we choose), or as responsible women who want to be in charge of our time, our finances, and our freedom.

Thanks to the World Wide Web, all you need to start your own business these days is a computer, an Internet connection, and voilà, you’re set to go. Easy. Almost… I mean, it’s not exactly that easy. In fact, it can be downright HAAARRRDDDDD. The online marketers like to leave that part out.
Have you noticed? They don’t tell you about what it takes to become a “businesswoman.” And there’s a lot. They don’t want to scare you off. They’d rather you find out later, after they get your money. (I’ve, but I’ve been at this for a while and there have been times when I’ve purchased products and courses that, quite frankly, promised more than they delivered.)
The learning curve is steep at times. Which is why I often hear this from my clients; “But Lin, this isn’t what I expected.”
I know, right? It was the same for me! I built it. Hardly anyone came.
The BIG lesson? I needed to learn how to become a businesswoman. I had to learn how to run a business, and I needed to stop expecting a “quick fix” or an “easy solution.”
That’s when I decided to regroup, analyze all the information I had acquired, separate the relevant from the useless, and make my own way… chart my own course.
Make it mine.
This meant I had to get crystal clear about my target market, a.k.a., niche. I also had to get super clear about my messaging. I had to create valuable, purpose-full content… both free and paid.
I had to offer products and services that people would happily pay for. And I mean “happily” because what I was offering was exactly what they were looking for and the contents on the inside matched the promise on the outside.
I had to build a solid sales and marketing funnel that would make me money. And… make me happy.
Happiness. When you start your own business you put yourself in complete charge of your freedom, your finances, your everything.
But most of all… you put yourself in charge of your happiness. It’s the “happiness” part that often gets left out when marketers tell us about building a business, and how we have to hustle hustle hustle. We hear about the grind more than we’re told how to manage the grind.; we’re told we have to work work work and take “massive action.”
It’s enough to make you feel like you’ve become an employee all over again, working long and crazy hours, feeling overwhelmed, except now you’re working for a crazy boss… YOU! Ugh. I was a terrible boss. I ran myself ragged. I already knew I was a terrible employee.
Now I was a terrible boss? How did that happen? It was crazy-making.
It took me a while to get a clue, I have to admit. I kept doing things the way I thought would work, or how I wished they would work, and how I expected them to work (because it would just be so much easier that way).
I see it now in my clients: they want to push against best practices. They want to do it their way because it’s easier. I understand. When I would receive good advice I’d push against it. I didn’t want to do it that way. I wanted to do it my way. I wasn’t ready to step UP.
Until I was. A new coach/mentor with the guts to tell it to me straight, finally said something that made sense to me. I had been relying on what I already knew to do something that I’d never done before. I’d never been a businesswoman.
Have you ever noticed the times when you want to dig in your heels and keep trying to do it “the old way” just so that you don’t have to step out of your comfort zone?
What I realize now, looking back, is that while I may have wanted to start my own business, I also didn’t want to start my own business.
This is the invisible war we fight in our heads.
But when this student was ready… really ready… she opened her eyes and her heart to doing whatever it took.
It takes GUTS to start your own business, Girlfriend.
And it takes TRUE GRIT to stick with it when the going gets tough. And yes, the going can get pretty darn tough. But there’s a smart way and a not-so-smart way to handle the tough times. With the right people around you, you learn and grow BECAUSE OF the tough times and the best part is you get to watch your business grow up with you. And this makes you happy.
Your list is growing.
You’re attracting your ideal best awesome amazing clients and customers.
You’re charging what you’re worth.
You’re establishing yourself as an authority in your chosen market.
How cool does that sound?
There is a way. It can be done. But first you have to decide whether you’re prepared to do WHATEVER IT TAKES TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSWOMAN.
That’s your first move… committing to go all in. And then… you start again. You figure out what you have to do and, step by step, you do it.

So, of course this is scary. And you alone get to decide whether it’s worth busting through the fear.
Always remember this: the last thing you want to feel at the end of your life is REGRET.
You never want to say, “I wish I’d had the guts to go after my dream.”
