One of the biggest “mistakes” I made when I first started my business was assuming I could do it all myself. After all, I was a “quick start.” Unfortunately, there was no Quick Start Guide To Building An Online Business From Scratch.
So I made it up as I went along.
What I didn’t understand was the big difference between what I needed to do vs. what I wanted to do.
I wanted to be my own boss. I wanted to play on the creative side. I didn’t realize how much I was avoiding the business side of running a business. I spent a lot of time focusing on having the “perfect website” built, and then creating products and services I thought would put me “in business.”
Boy was I was naive. I had no idea that if I had put myself in the driver’s seat of Pinto.
I needed a Ferrari.
I spent 3 years in the slow lane, chugging along in my Pinto, before I realized the problem wasn’t me, it was the car I was driving. No matter how fast I wanted to go, my metaphorical Pinto wasn’t capable of speed. The problem? There was no traction. I hadn’t taken the time to answer these 7 important questions before I took off, without any idea where I was going.
Like a car, a business needs traction or you’ll be left spinning your wheels at the start line. You’ll do a little of this (website stuff) and a little of that (list building stuff) but your business won’t go anywhere. Soon you find yourself in a ditch, also known as overwhelm.
The voice of Self Doubt has a sneaky way of allowing us to keep playing small and driving in the slow lane by whispering in our ear that we’re “not ready.”
My website’s not ready.
My tag line isn’t perfect.
My opt-in isn’t quite right.
My program needs more work.
I don’t have my certification.
This the kind of (subconscious) thinking that keeps us spinning our wheels. It doesn’t help that we don’t have a clear plan for building a profitable, sustainable business that makes us whistle while we work.
Here’s what I wish I had learned, sooner:
There are three phases when it comes to building a profitable online business and you need to complete them in order, as in, the first phase first, then the second phase, and then the third.
Your business won’t go anywhere if you drive up to the start line driving a Pinto. The problem is you may not even realize you’re behind the wheel of a Pinto.
Here’s how to make sure you pull up to the start line driving a Ferrari.
Phase 1 of the Quick Start Guide To Building An Online Business From Scratch is about laying the foundation (building the fast car) so that you’re able to get traction once you launch your business.
This means focusing on these 4 structural components of your business’s foundation:
Without nailing these down, first, your message will be diluted, your website will be confusing, and you won’t be able to consistently build your list and get paying clients and customers.
How long does it take to complete Phase 1? You can do it in as little as 3 weeks if you follow a program that adheres to the four main components of this phase, like my Fast Action TRACTION Lab. You don’t have to do it in 3 weeks, but you do need to approach this phase systematically so that you’re ready for Phase 2.
Once you complete Phase 1 it’s time to accelerate into the fast lane.
This is when you’re going to focus on building your email list by driving traffic to your website.
Your email list will ultimately become your business’s main profit generator, which makes it a key asset. Almost every successful entrepreneur I’ve ever met has said, “I wish I’d started building my list sooner.”
But too often I’ve seen business owners try to build a list with an opt-in that simply says, “Join my email list.” Meanwhile, it’s not at all clear what the website’s core message is or who that message is aimed at. That leaves them vulnerable to being left in the dust of the competition.
This is why it’s so important to follow a strategic online business building process, otherwise you’re racing around in a Pinto that barely has any gas!
Who doesn’t want to have an impact on the world? As female entrepreneurs we all want to leave a legacy behind as proof that we made the world a better place for having had the privilege of being here.
I don’t know about you but I suspect you’re not just starting a business for the sake of becoming your own boss. You love the work you do. You want to make a difference in people’s lives and you want to reach as many people as you can.
You want a purpose-driven business.
This is the focus of Phase 3 of the quick start guide to building an online business from scratch… how to have an impact. How to use your expertise, influence, and altruism to contribute in ways that go beyond making a profit.
Perhaps you want to write a book to inspire others.
Perhaps it’s a podcast where you can use your voice to shake up the status quo.
It didn’t take Mark Zuckerberg very long to learn that money can only buy him so much happiness… the rest is on him, as a conscious entrepreneur, to define his version of “impact.”
When we have an impact we are “pushing the human race forward.”
Here’s to the crazy ones, like you and me!
